5 tips to avoid scratches to your car

1. Be smart about parking lots

Most scratches and dents occur in parking lots, particularly when the people parked next to you aren't being careful with their vehicle doors, or even when they rub up against your car trying to get into or out of theirs. The best way to reduce this risk is to park in an empty part of the lot and walk the few extra steps to get into the building. If that's not an option, parking in an end space will reduce your risk of scratches by about 50 percent. Avoid parking next to cars with baby seats, as careless parents sometimes swing the door wide to get their children in or out of the seat. Finally, never try to create more space by double parking. It only antagonizes other people trying to use the lot and increases the chance that they might intentionally damage your vehicle.

2. Practice parallel parking

Lots of people avoid parallel street parking like the plague because they hate trying to maneuver the car between other vehicles. However, it's a great way to reduce the risk of scratches because no one can park next to you!

3. Keep the car garaged

Obviously, the more time your car spends parked in a garage or covered carport, the less exposure it has to the elements and other humans, and the more protected it will be.

4. Avoid exposure to severe weather

We've all seen examples of the unfortunate vehicle whose body is pock-marked from sitting in a hailstorm. But hail isn't the only weather culprit that can cause damage. High winds can kick up dust, sand, dirt clods, small stones and twigs, all of which can wreak havoc on your car's paint job. If turbulent weather threatens, leave the car in the garage and go out another time.

5. Keep foreign objects off the car

This might seem obvious, but you'd be surprised how many people cause scratches to their own vehicles by setting items on the roof or hood to open the door, or by sitting on the car themselves. Anything that makes contact with your vehicle, other than soft cloths or water, has the potential to damage the finish.
